I take it quite differently. A President can do pretty much anything as long as his or her party has sufficient votes in either chamber *and* the other party is unable to get an overwhelming (super?) majority of the public to say removal is of the utmost importance.
The biggest lesson of the impeachment trial is that presidents can do pretty much anything they want as long as their party holds at least 34+ seats in the Senate.

It is on that last part that the Democrats failed, just as the Republicans failed in the 90s. If 2/3 of the public were saying "remove him" and listing that removal as one of their most important issues, Trump would be gone.

That lesson was learned from Clinton. The lesson here is holding majority counts in minimizing the damage of what actually comes out.

It’s pretty terrible for the country. Conservatives won’t like what the Dems do next in power with it. It’s so shortsighted. I would rather have first 50 people from the phone book leading us.

The biggest lesson is the Founders enshrined much more trust in the voters than they did in the political whims of Congress.

They ceded most authority to slave holders and landowners. We are witnessing the establishment of permanent minority control of the federal government . That is not what FF intended.
