That explains a lot, I'm going to stick with ggplot2. Also one thing that's bad for matplotlib is the defaults (no legend, no axis label from the data, discrete scales with numbers are almost impossible to do...) not just a problem of documentation for me.

Like Tom says, the double-edged sword of matplotlib is that it's highly customizable.
