NEW: The PATRIOT Act’s most notorious provisions, affecting the privacy of millions of Americans, are expiring. House Republicans are furious over FBI surveillance on Trump’s campaign. And these are two ships passing in the night.

The single-minded cruelty that Trump has displayed towards Puerto Rico is just disgusting.

There are plenty of wealthy people who don’t do this, and plenty of people who aren’t wealth who do.

Judge Rosemary Márquez's opinion is worth reading in full but this is the arguably the key passage — a damning critique of the core argument prosecutors have used to criminalize the provision of humanitarian aid for decades.

The IDP screwed up with the dumb app. But they're doing the right thing going over the ballots to ensure they release accurate numbers. To call the legitimacy of the process into question because waiting irritates news junkies, campaigns and cable networks is totally pernicious.

I am one of those annoying "hand-marked paper ballots!" fanatics. We had them this year in Iowa. And they're serving their function. But if we're going to make them the norm, we need to fiercely resist expectations of, and pressure for, instant dispositive results.

That's the other thing. Iowa won't vote Democratic in presidential elections, and yet people have spent a year there just for the D caucus results... I'd say heads should roll, but one big symptom of our age is that they never do among the entrenched powers. They fail up and up.

Less apologies, more accountability. There is no other way forward. Many well-meaning experts warned these people, and they chose not to listen—despite many previous examples of similar failures. Imagine all the wasted effort that went into the caucuses.

I was in Iowa and watched countless volunteers pour their hearts and souls into the campaigns. The app that failed is by a for-profit tech company founded by "veterans" of the 2016 Clinton campaign. Nothing will get fixed till these people stop failing up.

Where's the line between incompetence and maliciousness when incestuous political relationships lead to contracting a woefully unprepared company to build an app that fails miserably in predictable ways? Or when all the people involved land on their feet?

This kind of reporting epitomises the American view and value of Yemeni lives as being unimportant, worthless. We as journalists are shaping a narrative used by politicians that makes it perfectly okay to keep killing the never mentioned. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

After 10yrs of reporting on Yemen this kind of thing from US media still never ceases to amaze. A background graf on previous attempt to kill/capture AQAP’s al-Raymi, notes death of Navy SEAL while completely omitting US killing dozens of civilians including at least 10 children.

Among the lives Donald Trump’s new black- and brown-people ban will be wrecking: -The Nigerian adoptee of an American woman -A U.S. citizen hoping to reunite with his four children -A man whose wife, two children, mother, and sisters are all American.

The world doesn’t want to hear “China bad”, even if it has strong elements of truth. They want to hear what the US has to offer. Sadly our answer, these past 3 years, has all too often been a big middle finger.

What's striking about this is that the new restrictions don't bar tourists/visitors from Nigeria, etc. Just those who want to move to the U.S. permanently. So it can't really be about national security. It's about not having immigrants from certain places. Am I missing something?
