I had someone trying to use (without spacer) and not taking dust cap off. Also using upside down and also using about 5 cm away from the mouth
‘show me’ super important and surprising! -
We should write a book....

I once asked my uncle to show me his inhaler technique. He shook the inhaler. Then pressed down on the cannister 4 times and then breathed in. Failed many times by many HCPs for 20+ years. Asking patients to demonstrate inhaler technique is never inconvenient. Just do it!

Mum told me grandad did this years ago. Husband & I nurses, dad community pharmacist w >20y experience at the time. Grandad was an intelligent man, v sensible. We found out later he'd worked in 'intelligence'. Everyone assumed he knew he had to take the lid off..

Teaching families/kids once is not enough to maintain acceptable inhaler technique. This should be checked at every contact with a HCP. I have recently seen Clenil canister in a Salbutamol actuator. Repeated education/review is the key. Life is busy!

Amazing to me, as a patient (albeit an involved patient) that more RTs, nurses, and physicians don't use the simple "teach back" method. It's really not rocket science or anything new....simply a proven method that is underutilized.
