Lovely fresh olivine in a picrite from Kilmory Glen in Rùm, with a bit of plag, cpx, and chromite thrown in for good measure. From the thin section collection.

  2. Good morning on this very windy Thursday! Here's an object to match the weather - 'Fantasy' by Ray Flavell, 1993, is a blown glass sculpture evoking the force of wind and waves 🌊 Made in Scotland, naturally.

Delicately thin and smooth light green glass sculpture shaped like a breaking wave. Two deep green spheres sit within it, and fringed edges evoke the wind.

Had to catch my breath today when I saw how 's wonderful photographers have brought this agate bracelet to life for my book. Colleagues say they see contour lines on a topographic map, aerial photography, rockpools. I see (I think) an image for the front cover...

We couldn't leave the without a postcard of everyone's favourite wee Vikings, the Lewis chess pieces ♟️ As well as donning the expression we've all made in many Zoom meetings, they've been around the world in postcard form. Here's one from to you!

"I am always thinking about you." Private William Dick sent this embroidered postcard from "somewhere in France" to his wife, Maggie, in November 1915. Mortally wounded in 1916, they would never meet again. Listen to his words:

Others tell odd tales, like that of the Turra Coo 🐮 A farmer's refusal to contribute to National Insurance in 1911 resulted in his cow being repossessed. There were auctions, riots and a triumphant return! Read the whole story

Not all postcards show iconic locations or grand affairs. Some take a documentary approach to daily life. This postcard printed by J.B. White of Dundee in 1900 shows three people shelling mussels outside a cottage in Auchmithie, Angus.

Go back a century & I'm hunting the biggest lost story of Scottish aviation: the colossal R34 airship. Built by Glasgow shipbuilders it made the first east-west crossing of the Atlantic. In our trusty Tiger Moth we search out its launch site at East Fortune (4/10)
