So as they sit and watch the tree burn, Yoda leans over to give Luke one last piece of wisdom. “Refuse to fight, do you? Choose to win another way? Listen, Young Skywalker. Tell you what I did, I will.”

We can see from Rebels that Yoda did just that. He passed on his failures to the remaining Jedi, trying to guide them away from the follies that led him into the Clone Wars.

Years later, Yoda appears to Luke after Rey exposed his failure and left to confront Kylo and Snoke. “Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is.”

(Of course there’s the problem of Yoda’s “last Jedi” statement in ROTJ. Maybe he didn’t consider the others fully trained Jedi? Maybe they were dead by then? Maybe it’s just a retcon problem?)

So when Luke returns to Dagobah in ROTJ to complete his training he doesn’t find Yoda sick or old, he finds him worn down from training who knows how many other Jedi/survivors from his distant exile.

Master Yoda isn’t taking up his lightsaber against the Empire, but he’s still fighting back. He’s finding and guiding Jedi from across the galaxy... and it’s wearing on him. As powerful as he is, helping Jedi survivors is slowly killing him.

Go back and watch the clip of Ezra and Yoda again, and tell me that you don’t see in Yoda the same sentiment that Luke has at the end of TLJ—“Master Yoda, how are we supposed to win if we don’t fight back?!” “Win? Win? How Jedi choose to win, the question is.”

It’s here that I find a possible explanation for why Yoda might have died young. He exiled himself to Dagobah, but clearly he didn’t cut himself off from the surviving Jedi. I’m willing to imagine that it was more than just Ezra and Kanan that he helped, too.

Rebels presaged a lot of the force powers that would appear in the Sequel trilogy, among them being the ability to have face-to-face meetings across vast distances. And in TLJ, Kylo remarks that “the strain would kill you.” Look at what happened to Luke.

But getting back to Yoda and his possibly untimely death. When he appears to Ezra on Lothal, how does he do that? It’s not the same as Luke’s force projection, but it is somewhat akin to the initial connection between Rey and Kylo.

Does this sound familiar? Maybe like the very thing that Luke does after almost giving in to darkness and killing Ben? Both masters, after realizing the dark side’s influence in their willingness to fight, exile themselves away and renounce the sword.

Rebels confirms this sentiment in Yoda when he appears to Ezra in the Jedi temple on Lothal. He realized the darkness he had succumbed to in the Clone Wars, and I think that has much to do with his self-imposes exile.

“By fighting at all, the Jedi lost.” At the end of the Clone Wars, after Yoda’s duel with Palpatine, he says, “Into exile I must go. Failed I have.” But imagine that he’s not talking about failing to kill the Emperor. He failed by leading the Jedi into war.

So, I have an idea about this. Let’s say that yes, Yoda did die young. But why? Here’s where I think we can make some pretty interesting connections with Rebels and TLJ.
