Seems wrong? - confirmation bias is good for social signaling when among those who already agree, but hurts discussing varying viewpoints
A priori I'd expect biases to be good for selfish reasons but bad in a group view, not other way around, because selfish genes
But in particular, it helps cognitive division of labor only in so far as devil's advocate is confirmation bias.
But playing D.A. with ideas requires the opposite attitude of confirmation bias, even though it's superficially similar.
And if you're good at playing devil's advocate, you're often almost as good at doing it to your own ideas as others.
This, I think, is the crux of where I'd disagree. Most people suck at being self critical in particular ways, so outside feedback is needed.
Hmm, unfortunately not a crux for me. You could convince me and I'd still say confirmation bias worsens discourse btw disagreeing parties.
What did you think of the a priori consideration? Isn't it surprising if a bias is good for distributing labor, not selfish?
Is this conv. here improved if I only think of points on my side? Even for div of labor, it's bad, makes me say things easy to shoot down
It's not about only considering your own side, it's about arguing for an opinion instead of immediately updating to reflect aumann consensus
