Ian Smith in his essay "We are Othello" got me really thinking about the personal pronouns I use esp. in writing: Who do I need to include in "we"? Who do I have the right to include in "we"? What happens to my "I" if I am thinking in "we"? 4/14

Slowly, I've been doing the "turns inward" (@Elysabethgrace), and thinking about what this all means for my life, my teaching, my scholarship, my service. 5/14

I've made attempts in teaching and writing--things that have taken time. Big experiments, often failed. The writing gets rejected (I think for good reason--the writing's been a little angry--it reads as if I'm arguing with my former self) (img: Pooh dancing off a wall) 6/14pic.twitter.com/jBRRhFdklQ

And my teaching about race in premodern texts and culture has probably has been just as uneven, and potentially traumatizing to BIPOCs in my classrooms as all the students experience it all differently. Still working on this. 7/14

I know from reading Beverly Daniel Tatum, @alimichaelphd, et. al., that I'm probably in some stage (it changes) of racial identity development. This development has scrambled what I took as familiar and normal, and this new feeling is normal and good 8/14

Anyhow, there ain't no going back, and change is worth it because this is a matter of equity, freedom, educating all of our students, and well, people's lives (professionally and personally) more than my comfort. 9/14

I guess what I'm saying is my commitment to change is just to keep going. Even if, to quote the Indigo Girls: "you know, me and Jesus, we're of the same heart. / the only thing that keeps us distant is that I keep f***ing up" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKqUglOC3_8 … 10/14

I'm grateful to the BIPOC writers (including here on this website) I'm learning from, and may your work (and my attempts at it) hasten a world that is better than this one. 11/14

Also, @wwnorton, can we update the @NortonAnthology to not use the term A-S as if it's just a neutral and accurate academic term. It's not. See https://medium.com/@mrambaranolm/anglo-saxon-studies-academia-and-white-supremacy-17c87b360bf3 … by @ISASaxonists 13/14

We have have become aware of the increasingly problematic use of the term "Anglo-Saxon" and are actively thinking about the issue!

Thank you @NortonAnthology. Yes, the term is increasingly problematic but I think the point scholars are making is also that the term has always already been problematic. Please keep us up to date. If there's the ability to publish as a PDF a new version of the Intro to ... 1/2

          Replying to @kilgorerob1 @NortonAnthology and

"The Middle Ages to ca. 1485" (pp. 3-29), that would be helpful for teaching until the next print edition comes out. It would be nice not to teach *against* the NAEL as much as possible.
