I find that I prefer to create designs that focus on simplicity. The main elements should support the premise, without there being too many pieces of information to detract from and compete with that focal idea...

...That way the broad scope appeal and messaging in character’s design is immediately apparent to the wider audience first. That being said, after I lock into that simple idea, I add in smaller more subtle notes that add extra levels of depth for those people who really look. :)
