I am a decades-long supporter of single, 18-year terms for justices, staggered so that each presidential term has two vacancies to fill. Removes current incentive to pick only younger people, lowers temp, no conflicts with comparable for Comptroller General. https://twitter.com/jonfavs/status/1106269925394403328 …

Interesting idea ... we’ll put it on the pile with the other ideas that need a Constitutional Amendment and will never happen

An interesting idea. If each SCOTUS judge is appointed during an odd year we would currently have 4 from GW Bush, 4 from Obama, 1 from Trump. One Bush appointee would be getting ready to leave and be replaced by a Trump appointee.

Considering at this point the Court is functioning as a third legislative chamber in some degrees, even less democratic than the Senate, this seems to be the least we can do.

But we also need some way to ensure that picks get actually seated. Yes, there needs to be some mechanism to block truly wrong nominees, but you can't allow blanket blocking of appointees, or even refusal to consider them, in order to leave vacant seats for the next president.

18 years should be long enough to get up to speed on the issues & avoid term limits pitfalls. So long as cases are assigned without respect to term limits it should work. I like this idea more the more I consider it.

But from Mitch's point of view, he is the hero in this, seizing all the power he can and aiding his rich benefactors.

Founding fathers had very good reasons for the lifetime appointments? Skeptical of this idea, but kinda think a mandatory retirement age like 67 & 1/2 or so seems reasonable (& for all govt branches too)
