I wouldn't mind a Copilot capable of providing good suggestions with training on a much smaller data set, but my guess is that the technology only works with a large data set. It could easily see this being adopted for private code bases, for restricted usage within a company

If they had just released this as "GitHub Code Search", with an editor plugin that does auto-fill, and the ability to filter by license, it would be entirely uncontroversial. But I guess they had to ride the machine-learning hype train.
