it's bad that people are overreacting to the telemetry thing but the "you can't use this unless you're 13" thing is actually bad and also illegalhttps://twitter.com/zkat__/status/1412462744486309888 …

it's also important to note that audacity is not open source, it is free software. free software a la the FSF is a failed ideology but we also can't just throw up our hands and say "okay we give up, we as individuals don't actually care about Freedom 0"

Wait, it's source is continuously updated on GitHub and anyone can contribute though. Doesn't that constitute open source, or is there something I'm missing here?

I suppose. Open source, as a movement and term, is explicitly in opposition to free software, and I think it's important to make that distinction. MIT is open source, GPL is free software.

Certainly audacity is "source-available", as is all open source software.

Thanks for the info! I'm a huge fan of open source stuff, but still new to the general community of it all and whatnot :D

Valid! The intra community terms and rivalries are complex and not important unless you're interested in long term strategy and stuff. Personally I find "open source" a very... uncomfortable? term as it mainly serves to wash away the radical parts of free software
