come to think of it, it's kind of a difficult position to be in; on the one hand, FSF-style hardcore free software is not really viable and, indeed, insisting on its tenets often leads to abuse on the other hand, without it, i would not be in computing at all
ideally we would have a free software ecosystem that is accessible to all - without the current cesspool we see in communities like suckless and the dogpiles we see all over the place. i know, i've been at the center of them. BUT
to say that we would be better off without any free software movement is to say that anyone whose needs aren't served by the increasingly hostile dual worlds of proprietary computing - MacOS/iOS and Windows/Android+ChromeOs - doesn't belong
and not merely that. free software is not just deeply embedded in the work of computing, the central spine and brain stem of every modern computer _is_ free software. everything at the core of modern society is or was produced using it.
to imagine a world in which there was no free software movement is to imagine a completely different world - for the better, in some ways, but for the worse in others. it's our responsibility, now, to move beyond, not just away from, that legacy.
But yeah this is really a huge problem with both open source funding and how society treats things that don't directly make line go up. It's an annoyingly large problem. It also circles into how society treats art (essential, yet the "starving artist" trope exists for a reason).
Come for the ideals; stay to prevent the capitalist machine from crushing you
I like to look at free software from a communication standpoint, and how it is fundamentally a common body of knowledge. Vendors need to come at it from that perspective.
