it's also important to note that audacity is not open source, it is free software. free software a la the FSF is a failed ideology but we also can't just throw up our hands and say "okay we give up, we as individuals don't actually care about Freedom 0"

Wait, it's source is continuously updated on GitHub and anyone can contribute though. Doesn't that constitute open source, or is there something I'm missing here?

I suppose. Open source, as a movement and term, is explicitly in opposition to free software, and I think it's important to make that distinction. MIT is open source, GPL is free software.
