i think (and i am kinda guessing here) that the tabs were the last even slightly skeuomorphic element of the interface, and were pretty clearly tied to the old FF design (pre-Quantum). everything is de-skeuomorphicized now and that might feel like the end of an era to some
i'm probably the only person who thinks this but the new firefox tabs are really neat, both literally and figuratively
