That's not at all true. It just means the resulting product has to be open source. You use the commons, you contribute back to the commons.

Unless you are talking about commercial open source... most commercial code needs to be closed source.pic.twitter.com/iCegYLQ1zk

"Unless you are talking about chocolate cake, most cake is vanilla." I think that a company that uses my work should contribute their changes back. If they don't want to, they can go chew rocks.

What a fallacious comparison. Most commercial code is closed source and that's it. It is the reason why companies like Apple, Microsoft or Google actively avoid using GPL and have removed a lot of GPL dependencies. When it comes to code, you could even say that GPL harms OSSW.

Yes. Correct. I do not want Apple, or Microsoft, or Google to use my code. That is why it is licensed GPL.

OK, this is the reality of OSSW unfortunately. People coding OSSW that doesn't want people to use it. OK.

Why should I want to do free work for the biggest companies in the world without them even contributing back their time? What moral imperative are you assuming here?

What's the point of creating OSSW that nobody would use? I am not sure. Let's ask the Church of Stallman, maybe they have an answer. The point of OSSW is make SW fair and more accessible, and enhance the usage of tech for everyone. Or so I believed.

And I believe that "not Google, Apple, or Microsoft" ≠ "nobody". Yes?

Well, think about OS and add up Windows and MacOS and check up how many desktops are left for the Hurd.

idk what you want from me, dude. I daily drive Ubuntu and it's fine. I don't care about "winning" the market, I care about making my life and other people's lives better and free software, not open source, does that, in my experience.

My experience is that people needs to make a living in OSSW, like everywhere else, and being a license zealot detracts from users and from sponsorship opportunities.
