also this is only true if you take the default state of software to be BSD licensing, which it isn't. the default is closed source

and yes I have absolutely used GPL because it is more "restrictive" (open to interpretation) than BSD-style licenses

We can get back to the same discussion, but think to yourself if it adds up to the OSSW world or detracts from it. Then you do you. I personally think that the GPL detracts, in number of users and possibilities of actually make a living out of OSSW.
