I'm excited to get one, but won't have the cash until near the end of the kickstarter. Am I in danger of not being able to get a slot if I plan to pledge on, say, the 28th?

If you pledge now Kickstarter won't charge your card until 31 July, after the campaign ends, and you can withdraw your pledge before then. At least that's how it is for me.
