yeah "you have violated the license of some code in here but we don't know whose code it was" isn't gonna get very far and that obfuscation works out rather nicely for github

what i'd like it's that copyright is default deny: if a license is silent on an action, then that action is not allowed this could give, uh, the FSF with its large volume of copyright assignments the needed standing

the FSF might have enough code to get their foot in the door, and I guess all you need is to make it to discovery before a judge laughs you out of the courtroom

yeah. also, the FSF has lawyers who can figure out what legal theories it makes sense to pursue. we look forward to, at the very least, some sort of position statement from them. that could clarify things a lot.

sucks that they're the people best in a position to do something about this. critical support for the FSF in the struggle against bullshit, and all that

we believe that they've shown a lack of ideological leadership in recent years, but they made a big impact early on in the FOSS movement and we do believe they deserve full credit for that.

we're not here for attempts to reduce that history to a pure-good / pure-bad kind of thing.

I suppose so. I recognize that I'm speaking harshly, and perhaps it's just due to my youth, but I genuinely cannot think of a product or legal decision Microsoft has made in my lifetime that made personal computing better or easier for me or those I care about.

we're defending the FSF, not Microsoft. we agree that good things MS has done should be recognized, too, but megacorps get the same treatment we give individuals who've hurt us: we don't invent apologies on their behalf, that's their responsibility.

we think it's a pretty simple principle really. if they want to be forgiven they have to *ask* for it.

Oh, oh, I see. Sorry, I have many notifications right now and the context was lost. I agree completely.
