oh wow. now that you mention it, it's a very interesting question whether it's even possible for an ML model to comply with the GPL.

the GPL goes into considerable detail on what it means to provide the "source" of something.

Yeah. They would have to provide the scripts they used to train the model, and all the training material...

sorry, i don't see it: that's the AGPL territory, no? for GPL, providing the original training data without modification should meet section #1 of the GPL

yeah, you're correct. we went back and re-read the GPL just now to look for the relevant wording and that's when we were reminded of the AGPL.

still, training a model makes the model itself the derived work? so I'd it aggregated GPL and an incompatible license it wouldn't be distributable what
@hipsterelectron has been talking about, provenance? that probably means having standing would be hard to justify :-/2 Antworten 1 Retweet 5 Gefällt mir -

yeah the hardest part about this seems like actually bringing a lawsuit

we've heard a bit over the years about the work that goes into creating legal test cases. it involves a lot of work trying to find someone who's been harmed in a way with exactly the right fact pattern.

this may well be a form of harm which GitHub gets away with simply due to the logistical difficulty of bringing a case.

yeah "you have violated the license of some code in here but we don't know whose code it was" isn't gonna get very far and that obfuscation works out rather nicely for github

this is the kind of thing that makes me about this
close to running away and living in the woods
how can we imagine a better future when even our present is being actively preyed upon by those we rely on

this is why we think it really is important to take hard-line stances on moral issues (such as: don't use proprietary software), despite the inconvenience

Yep. I have only one Windows PC in my house, and until taking my recent job, did 100% of my school and freelance work on free desktops. Frankly, at this point, proprietary software _is_ an inconvenience for me, more than a respite.
