I don't think I have any special insight, really. Looking at the rest of your thread, you're aware that Aaron Schwartz was heavily involved in some of the more interesting parts of this work; I recall some of the smaller publishers interested in this being bought by Elsevier, too
yes definitely. it seems embedded into the funding streams, and was the fate of many projects. I wonder about stories of people involved, like if there was/is a group that tried to organize against the pattern of cooption or it was just a process of people picked off by companies
