This is GitHub though, the proprietary SaaS derived from the GPL git tool. I will agree with you and not expect a freedom-preserving outcome.
I don't think that's really accurate - yes, it's "based on" Git, but it's not based directly on the Git code. They suck, but they've never done this before quite so egregiously.

I am not sure how the argument holds. If Copilot does not include on its own source code any of that GPL code, I am not sure that it matters the training data, as it's not part of the software distribution.
