I don't actually think anyone wants big decentralized chat systems like mastadon; what they want is a big centrally run chat system with no friction but that isn't completely co-opted by corporate garbage.

I don't think the success of discord is based on appearing to be federated. It's more about giving communities a free, isolated space and the tools to structure and moderate them efficiently. And, for now, it's not overrun by technically inept boomers. Huge plus.
Sure, but the way they give people those tools is by mimicking a federated model - so it shouldn't be hard for, e.g. Matrix, to add such tools.

Mh. I see the isolation and freedom of communities - but where do you see the federated aspects of discord? Maybe I'm imagining something different under that term.

Well, Discord is federated on the backend, but, as in Matrix, that's largely hidden from the user except when creating rooms and communities...
