I don't actually think anyone wants big decentralized chat systems like mastadon; what they want is a big centrally run chat system with no friction but that isn't completely co-opted by corporate garbage.

Mastodon isn't a chat system, though. It's a social media platform - and, as a matter of fact, it's pretty great at a lot of things specifically _because_ it's federated! There are problems, but there are also new opportunities.

Specifically, by allowing individual servers to define their identity through branding, moderation, and alternative interfaces, the Fediverse has an inbuilt commitment to diversity and community-mindedness that's all but impossible in centralized spaces.

In fact, Discord is so successful partly because it simulates a federated system! They even call communities "servers"!

As long as the protocols we use are resistant to the kind of fedi-specific threats we see in Mastodon now, and resilient in a way that lets them evolve over time (as ActivityPub is), we can both move quickly and reduce the risk of corporate meddling.

All this not to take away from your point - users _should_ be insulated from federation issues in some areas, though not everywhere. Just, social media/microblogging's issues are different from chat's, and we have to think about those issues differently in different spaces.

I think the underlying goals are good, but the system is vastly too complex to describe and understand for the vast majority of people to wrap their head around and want to use. Lots of good non-mainstream use cases though, for sure.

Oh, I agree. Personally, though, I think that's fine; not everyone should have to understand every facet of every system we use. Indeed, it's a bit of a double standard, since we can't even begin to understand the "why" of Twitter, Facebook, etc (as they're closed source).

Sure! I'm not at all against mastodon, just saying I think it's destined to be a marginal (but useful) sideline to any truly mainstream move to a new platform.

(due to [at least perceived] complexity)
