I don't actually think anyone wants big decentralized chat systems like mastadon; what they want is a big centrally run chat system with no friction but that isn't completely co-opted by corporate garbage.

As long as the protocols we use are resistant to the kind of fedi-specific threats we see in Mastodon now, and resilient in a way that lets them evolve over time (as ActivityPub is), we can both move quickly and reduce the risk of corporate meddling.

All this not to take away from your point - users _should_ be insulated from federation issues in some areas, though not everywhere. Just, social media/microblogging's issues are different from chat's, and we have to think about those issues differently in different spaces.

Server has special meaning to you, because you are technically well versed. They could as well have called it "community", "group", "instance" or invented something novel. But "server" fits the gaming background quite well, despite not technically being correct.
