These replies are fascinating to me, because per Hochschild (1983), emotional labor is _labor_ - that is, it "refers to regulating or managing emotional expressions with others as part of one’s professional work role".

Somewhere along the way, it became a term that means, in general, any kind of effort put into relationships or emotions - and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's definitely an interesting transformation.

As a follow-up: if emotional labor is broader than the Hochschild definition, what term would you use to describe the professional work of managing the emotions of customers and colleagues?

For the record, the Workplace Emotional Labor and Diversity lab at Penn State calls the friendship/relationship version "emotional work", in the same way that cutting up wood for a hobby is "work" but not "labor".
