These replies are fascinating to me, because per Hochschild (1983), emotional labor is _labor_ - that is, it "refers to regulating or managing emotional expressions with others as part of one’s professional work role".

Somewhere along the way, it became a term that means, in general, any kind of effort put into relationships or emotions - and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's definitely an interesting transformation.

hard to describe. it's kind of a "I know it when I see it" thing. Maybe: work where the person who performs it uses their own capacity of handling complicated or difficult emotions in order to reduce the emotional load of another?
