protip for people who feel compelled to say "identifies": replace "identifies as" with "says they are" and see how your statement looks then

my point here is just, you know, be careful with your language. annotative meaning is nowhere near sufficient to capture everything your audience will get out of a piece of writing and "identifies as" has been a weasel-word to get around saying "I don't believe you" for a while
