how many bits wide is it

Many (like, say, velocity or mass), but it gets more expensive to detect it's value to a higher precision, like measuring a voltage very precisely

I guess we can't set a subset of bits only?

It's an analog value, not a digital one.

any analog value can be digital if you modulate it fast enough

speaking of which, how fast can i modulate it

that's an interesting question - and definitely a parameter. i'd say it's like the EM field, where to vibrate it faster you have to put in more energy. May as well say it's the same order of magnitude but requires some kind of weird substance to couple to it.

so with an arbitrarily large energy supply, i could essentially have an arbitrary bit rate? then i would simply implement time-division multiplexing

yeah! i think that would be reasonable. let me throw in another wrinkle: part of the utility of this would be communicating with distant starships, which (presumably) don't have arbitrary amounts of energy. your base station, though, would. what then?

i feel like if you have a proper starship (i.e. FTL or lighthugging), you kinda inherently *would* have obscene amounts of energy lying around?

that's true! but at the same time, every joule you put into communications is a little bit of acceleration you aren't getting, so I feel like there's a significant incentive to save power. on the other hand, maybe you'd be accel-limited by your tolerable dynamic pressure? idk

or, potentially, by reaction mass!

but all of this depends very heavily on what you mean when you say “starship”
