it's very interesting to me how many people are thinking of this as a digital value. that's valid, i didn't specify, but as far as i know there are not that many values like that in the universe? (spin? electron energy level? energy of a photon?)

A bit is just an abstraction over some quanta of information with a specific degree of certainty
You can get infinite bits of information from an arbitrary physical volume as long as you are ok with infinite uncertainty (IE noise) 
Could it be a value that exactly represents any message and metadata (like protocol state) desired?
it's an analog scalar value. you can put whatever you want in there - but you have to agree on how that works with everyone else who is trying to change its value at the same time :)
