I have a lot of difficulty trying to reconcile the flirty kinky kind of queer culture I've seen around me (one where I haven't seen that many things go wrong, aside from some misreads and broken hearts) with the traumasoup and ppl getting hurt I see recently online

like, yeah, it's definitely always kinda been there in the background, as people open up, but it just wasn't nearly as bad as it seems now? maybe I'm around more fawners, or heavier trauma folks stuff felt relatively chill...? both for myself and others

the worst I remember from years ago was someone (who I knew) touching me when I didn't want to, and me asking them to stop. or being careless with people's feelings, messing around and then not knowing what one wants and getting scared. that's not great, but... it's not that bad

meanwhile so much stuff recently reads like "I was abused as I was stuck trying to give my all and I gave up all boundaries and people exploited that", or assault, or stalking. what the hell man, its so much worse than before. maybe we just filtered down our community back then

say what you want about the whole "cool kids clubs" of community churn under irc or discord but at least it was pretty good at somehow not putting extremely vulnerable and extremely controlling people next to each other like twitter

I guess I probably just wasn't in those spaces, honestly. god knows discord grooming is such an issue the "discord groomer" is a fucking meme at this point. I just stuck to private closed communities only accessible by vouching

yeah I mean this kind of thing definitely happened (to me, even, as a young teen) on Tumblr before Twitter was as big. I really think it's more about selectiveness of communities and how much about yourself you have to reveal to be trusted, how much of your interaction is public

Tumblr is public mostly (or was at the time, with the only alternative being passworded blogs), but people moved urls and deleted so frequently there was no real sense of reputation, no real scrutiny. thats one reason so many people jump to overblown cancel reactions now tbh
