i don't think it's just capitalism. we have the software capacity to make memex we just don't .. have it. no one has made it yet really
True - but I think a lot of systems have been headed towards the kind of interaction the Memex was meant to describe, but it's a fundamentally unprofitable one, while also being very complex. Companies shie away from it and it needs more than hobbyist time to produce.

the idea of memex is really not all that complex tbh. there's a handful of simple components that link together in various ways but it's not enormously complex, it's just someone needs to make it

I wonder - the wiki, for instance, is similarly pretty simple in concept but ends up having a lot of very subtle edge cases. MediaWiki is a case study in solving them poorly at great expense.
