is there an actual engineering reason that symmetric speeds are so rare or is it literally just because they want "power users" to have to upgrade

sure but like. that's probably because everyone uses cloud services because it's impractical to host shit at home... because internet speeds are asymmetric...

yeah. not to say there's _no_ point of cloud stuff but like... there exist really easy to use drop-in "personal cloud" devices but almost nobody uses them

this is the main reason tbh. hosting stuff is "business" activity so they can charge you more money. and that's true, tbh. for a variety of reasons.

in 2000, it was true just in virtue of how new the net was. in 2010 it was true because folx made webapps to do stuff because the overhead of doing it yourself was tedious, and now it's true because of momentum
