I guess I think of "success" for an OSS project is when the project solves actual problems for its users. That can happen even for relatively small userbases, and can fail to happen even for huge userbases?

I mostly want companies who do big trained-model things on their users data to get completely fucked because I think that it both: * doesn’t actually produce practically useful things, given the cost * the cost has a big environmental component

Copilot is *particularly* insidious because it is being *explicitly* marketed as a tool for the creation of new copyrighted works, implying its output is not infringing. That's as if I offered a lyric writing service and just gave people lyrics I've heard before.

does EU right to be forgotten apply to things like ML models trained on your data? like if an EU citizen were to close their GitHub account, would it no longer be ok to have their data be part of a training set?

Sure, but I can't give them to someone else or post them on my website claiming they aren't protected by copyright. GitHub is free to train their AI or even use it for research, but here they're sending its output to customers.

We already have laws against mechanical reproduction of copyrighted content, and we also have laws against unauthorized public performance of copyrighted content. A computer spitting out copyrighted code is mechanical reproduction, not public performance.

like this is not your fault but i've been hearing this a lot and it is starting to seriously get on my nerves. a computer cannot be "inspired", it can only roll dice. it has no notion of what's a good or bad idea, only what it's already seen more or less frequently.
