Lotta reasons, but basically water supplies in early European cities were contaminated with human waste. Drinking water and bathing would get you sick (which is why they were alcoholics). But apparently they brought "civilization" in popular American historical narratives.

My best guess is the cultural factors others bring up and then population growth being factors. By the time of American colonization, England's population centers were overloaded with people and the land wasn't producing enough for the population.
