New book! Reading about psychological “disassociation” from non-western paradigms. Ingerman has said that when psychologists talk about disassociation they fail to explain *what* is doing the disassociating. Shamanism believes part of one’s pure essence leaves the body.pic.twitter.com/nLJ0IbFhTv

I’ve been tangentially curious about shamanism for a while. From what little I know about it, it seems to be part of most human cultures until it is perceived to be subversive and then suppressed. And it’s interesting that the shaman seems often to be someone who is different...

...a purpose for those who don’t quite fit, I think people have speculated about neurodivergence and shamanic roles. In any case, I picked this up as I’m curious about such a world of practice and belief meeting psychology.

Cool! I picked up this author specifically because she is American and has a psychology degree, and I’m interested in how she integrates shamanism into her counseling practice.

And to your point about neurodivergence. I’m not sure about things like autism or ADHD and shamanism! But I do know often the shaman often suffers from trauma or mental illness before becoming a shaman. It’s a wounded healer model rather than an expert healer model.

I've gotten the impression that in addition to what we now consider neurodivergence, Shamanism(s) generally made space for fluidity of gender expression/identity. At least this is the case for the Sámi Shamanism I've personally practiced. I've heard it applies to others as well.

Wow thanks for bringing that up! Would love to hear more about Sámi shamanism! Several ppl I’ve talked to on the spiritual path have talked abt integrating masculine and feminine energies as part of their journey to become whole.

I love that! ☯️ I'm intending to share more on Sámi history and practices via the FolkloreThursday hashtag, so will be posting some tomorrow.

Will look forward to that, and hearing more about your experiences practicing this. I started reading Reindeer People a while back but it wasn't the right book for me at the time.
