You know I was thinking a lot today about mainstream yoga/mindfulness, and motivations ‘serious’ practitioners have for critiquing it. I think some of these critiques are valid, but some of them are about our own ego - we don’t want to be lumped in with “them.”

We want to be seen as unique and doing something important, not basic. But there is nothing more basic than suffering and trying any method to alleviate that suffering!

I think I agree, broadly. What I worry about are contexts where such practices feeding into the construction of more docile economic subjects, who think they have to deal with their own

I worry that mindful Barbie could be something that pushes in that way, by linking meditation to an object that’s seen as a commodity to be acquired. But maybe I’m wrong, and if so, we should probably just let a thousand lotuses bloom

I totally understand what you’re saying, but I think the problem of enlightenment being viewed as a commodity to be acquired is not something that ‘serious’ practitioners are immune to!

Maybe meditation Barbie is just Tara manifesting in a different form, trying to get bros in the buddhist world to stop taking themselves so damn seriously.

While not a fan of Barbie (she gave me nightmares as a child so I developed an aversion, tossing her into the street to be run over by cars), it seems like an age-appropriate adaptation, so I don't see it as any better/worse than adapting meditation to a sci-minded audience.

Upāya for tech/sci-minded adults (predominantly socioeconomically privileged white cis-het men) is no more/less justifiable than upāya for play-minded children (predominantly girls under the age of ten), so Barbie in this context gets a thumbs up, despite our rocky history.
