I’ve found my quantitative skills came back quickly after a period of 2.5 years of a job that didn’t require them. I also reapplied to PhD programs after I quit my first one. Had trouble letting it go. I think no matter what you do, it’s important to fully digest why you left.

Helpful contemplations. I left partly due to circumstances (horrific advising situation) and partly due to passions lying completely elsewhere. The academic equivalents of those elsewheres have been less than welcoming. So I continue to drift.

A choice between resurrecting the past or redefining the future. IMO what comes to us from past masters is little more the crumbs which survived the rats, bureaucrats and the predisposition to put your own stamp on someones else's work.

Perhaps some pieces from the past can shape the future into a more flourishing and fulfilling reality than what presently seems in store.
