i think i played my first Final Fantasy (VII) when i was 9 years old, around the same time i became acutely aware of and anxious about mortality i wonder if that's why those games, and similar dark/bittersweet JRPGs (like the Suikoden series) were so appealing 🤔 https://twitter.com/goblinodds/status/1251745782144720897 …

2 years 9 months minus 10 days, to my recollection. It was September 11, 1993 and I was struck by an infant (my cousin) in a rogue swing, causing me to black out. Otherwise, a few years later, I formally began nightly contemplations of mortality.https://twitter.com/NoaidiX/status/1245937804888035329?s=20 …

While not raised in a religious household, in the 90s, I was deeply impacted by an obscure TV ad with morbid imagery & a child's voice reciting a prayer: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; And if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

whew that's intense!! :o now i'm wondering whether i had a sense of mortality by the time i was 6 and was put under anesthesia for the first time 🤔 i don't have a recollection of the fear of death, but the fear had a similar quality

Anaesthesia seems to induce a visceral sense of dying for some people. My first time under at age 10, I recall the contents of my visual field dissolving as the beeping sound of the heart monitor increased, leaving only a single note and radiant white light. Woke up crying.

whoa that's terrifying!! both times for me it was like falling asleep--vague awarness of some time before going under, and then no awareness of whatever the last moments were, then next thing i knew i was awake

Nearly the same occurred many years later approaching the conclusion of a meditation retreat and then also at a mountain monastery in Taiwan, both in the context of lucid dreams. In those cases, it was a profoundly liberating experience, but absolutely terrifying as a child.
