Did the message of Buddhism get changed when it was translated from Indo-European languages into Chinese?

There's something both piercing & whimsical to Buddhism in Chinese—often playfully disorienting, as if pulling out the rug beneath one's feet. Some of this may be intentional while other bits are likely byproducts of the terser linguistic style. A changeable, pranksterish flavor.
