In the monasteries where I trained in Taiwan and S.Korea, the respectful-affectionate title "brother" was used in a gender-neutral, all-inclusive sense. In high school, I recall reading that all children were called "girls" at some point. When did things become so differentiated?

When my gender got tired of seeing our sisters abused to death daily by male superiority "members" of the orb, I guess. Perhaps during #isolation try focussing your compassion on #femicide for a month as an exercise like tonglen & see if that alters your blurred lines of enquiry.

It seems there's been some miscommunication here.

If its not strictly linguistic then an explanation is required before I remove my tweet.

This reflection arose from a recent exchange in which I was called "brother" despite never having revealed any gender identification on this account. Although I don't identify as such, I opt to embrace it as a friendly, inclusive term in the way I've heard it used in monasteries.

I see. As in britherly, sisterly comrades yes? May I ask what lineage were said monasteries? Some although light years ahead of other "religious" institutions still remain highly sexist amidst their camaraderie.

Yes, comrades. These monasteries were Chan and Seon (Chinese and Korean "Zen") by lineage. Women far outnumbered men, so I was initially puzzled. I later came to see the term was being used in a non-gendered way, even if it implicitly assumed male to be the default.

Zen linguistic comrades within feminine masculine neutral mix is relatively harmless. Whereas, Theravada has major issues. I have to go out for a bit, but wish to continue because if one thing can reduce female murder by men in the world, its Buddhism💎https://youtu.be/KzGVKUoKT9A
