At least for me it would be interesting to discuss the nature of bija and the process of planting seeds in the storehouse. Yogacara describes the seeds yet says little about how a seed is formed. A year ago this was the burning question of the day for me.

It would be interesting to me too. Tomorrow, I'll try to go back through the discussion of seeds from Xuanzang's "Demonstration of Consciousness Only," which may yield further sprouts in our fruitful conversations.

First, here are some theories on the origins of seeds, as outlined by Xuanzang in Chapter 3, Section 2, of the "Demonstration of Consciousness Only" (成唯識論; Cheng Weishi Lun).pic.twitter.com/qMBTlTZnXz

Immediately following this discussion, Xuanzang offers a refutation, illustrating the multiple interweaving seed theories and interpretations of the time.

Although not referencing seeds explicitly, a later passage by Xuanzang (Chapter 9, Section 2) on the power of samādhi & vows, which are undertaken by the bodhisattva in order to preserve the body's functioning in future births, hearkens back to the thread's original quote.pic.twitter.com/owFSkZ3irl

May I ask, What do these excerpts mean? I have the sense that they in part speak about genetic predispositions towards likes, dislikes, and patterns of behavior Are all potential manifestations contained in the vault at birth only to become active in relationship to experience?

In Xuanzang's refutation, two kinds of seeds emerge: 1) naturally existing seeds and 2) seeds created by perfuming. The former are with us since so-called beginningless time while the latter are within more immediate volitional range, depending on the skill of the cultivator.

Purfuming seems to suggest watering the seeds Seeds are organic structures Our biology determines the range of our potential experiences. Adrenaline junkies are generically programmed to seek risky behaviors I gots the God gene Can we have experiences that exceed our programming

I get the impression of flexibility, similar to neuroplasticity. There are ways to debug/reprogram/hack these systems. Best to do so carefully on one's own mind, teach the appropriate coding skill-sets to others, then share the code for them to implement & adjust as appropriate.

The practice is old and if the stories are to be believed periodically reintroduced into the world at large.

Fortunately, contemporary coders have access to tried-and-tested coding manuals that have been circulating for millennia.

It is my suspicion that bureaucrats and scholars have been distorting the teaching for thousands of years. Christianity is a fine example do you think Buddhism escaped the egotistical distortions selfish masters?

All systems are subject to erosion. Thus is the nature of conditioned things. That which is constructed can also be corrupted. The water in which the baby is bathed is of the nature to change. At one point, this disturbed me, but not anymore.
