How do I meditate on my thoughts? Seems like the goal cant be to enter a no mind state. Is it as simple as making sure you aren't swept away by a day dream—staying present, non-judgemental, and unattached to your thoughts?

If the practice is "open monitoring"-oriented, then to the extent possible, try observing thoughts as they arise and subside, neither leading nor being led—similar to watching waves on the ocean while on shore, or at least on a steady boat at sea.

A flimsy mind will capsize. With a solid foundation in equanimity, even in the absence of a meditation "object" as anchor, sailing will be mostly smooth. Occasionally, waves of thought will rock the boat, but not enough to whip it around or take you under. Balance is key.

Maintaining an anchor, such as the breath or another stabilizing "object" of meditation, in the midst of the waves while watching them come and go is one way to interweave these practices.
