Hypothesis Non particularized interest as the gateway to reliable 1st jhana. Sense pacification piti as inherently interesting sensations produced by base level, contentless, sensory mind adjusting thresholds for provoking interest downward towards non conceptual awareness.

Totally agree. This outlines my experience with the inward(downward) travel towards the further jhanas. It always starts with auditory interest then a retraction from outside phenomena and towards bodily signals. Then those fade as awareness sharpens to singular stimuli.

another hypothesis earlier jhanas reflect activation of Lateral hypothalamic corridor (1st) and septal area (2nd), but there also must be inhibition sensory input (looking for where that is, maybe thalamic inhibitory neuron covering also associated with attention)

I don't have clear experiences with 3/4+ for 5+, I think it's going down towards the brainstem, near the pons/vta, forget the exact areas (an area associated with loss of consciousness when lesioned)

This may also be of interest—https://www.hindawi.com/journals/np/2013/653572/ …—an EEG study on the neural correlates of jhāna in which Leigh was both the sole participant and a co-author. Back in 2014, I had the immense fortune to attend a jhāna retreat with Leigh, which was especially mind-blowing. 🤯

There are a few other related studies on the neural correlates of jhāna, including this recent EEG study across multiple participants:https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00178/full …

as is the REM connection, there's a pons/tegmentium area associated with REM. speaks to me about higher jhanas descending from basal-ganglia/hypothalamic corridor and into the brainstem
