A number of the above lines remind me of Chan calls against mind-blanking or "ghost-cave" experiencing, as in a famous dialog between Nanquan and his then student Zhaozhou. Yes! 魔境 (mójìng in Chinese, makyō in Japanese)—a major reason for jhāna/dhyāna undergoing recontextualization in Chan/Zen, where "states" are usually dismissed as a dead-end (e.g., 槀木死灰, "dried wood & dead ash"), urging the practitioner outward & onward from the cave.
