But when I do something bad I feel guilty, embarrassed and take it personally. "It's not personal" in this context would be a spiritual bypass

The "owning up" entailed in taking responsibility and subsequent behavioral modification is part of the process. It differs from egoism, which assumes a substantial and unchanging entity behind it all. The former is changing, while the latter actively resists change.
