The fourth stage of insight practice is called “the stage of arising and passing away” (A&P). A British man in my group said that he felt trillions of atoms in his body appearing and disappearing quickly, like more than 10 times per second.

When I go through this stage, it was like a particular part of my body was an effervescent tablet tossed into the water, dissolving violently while generating bubbles. At a later stage of A&P, It felt like the body was filled with TV snow. No body, just noise. And it’s annoying.

At a Mahāsī vipassanā retreat at Wat Chom Tong (Thailand) in 2017, the instructors described/demonstrated A&P as seizure-like. No group sharing. I’ve experienced it more like you and the British man from your group, but “buzzing.” Any mention of seizure at the center you were at?

yes. The peak of A&P happened one night when I woke up from my sleep. I found vibration in my arm so I decided to focus on that. Then There was a deafening tinnitus in my ears and skull-rattling vibration in my brain.

Had a viscerally similar experience in a lucid dream during an intensive 3-month practice period in 2016, but wouldn’t call it a seizure. The movements the instructors demonstrated on retreat entailed big “jerks” in sudden bursts. I’ve gotten electric shivers, but not seizures.
