Since childhood, I've had trouble distinguishing left from right and would need to virtually transplant myself into the little chair I'd sit in for meals in order to tell the difference. It was the only way.

Same goes for the cardinal directions. I could only distinguish W/E after distinguishing N/S, which required physically orienting myself to the surrounding houses. "X lives in the house to the N and Y lives in the house to the S. Now that I'm facing N, it's 'WE,' not 'EW.'"

In "adulthood" (whatever that means), I've gotten lost so many times, even using maps. So many instances getting stranded atop a mountain in Japan and being rescued by monks, or in the middle of the Cambodian countryside on the back of a stranger's motorcycle. Inconvenient.

Time also throws me off. I get really disoriented converting centuries to standard years and vice versa. Converting between "military time" and "non-military time" has resulted in some very unfortunate mishaps.

That goes for the PM hours only. AM and PM made no sense to me as a child, so I had to call them "at morning" and "partially midnight" in order to even begin to wrap my head around them. Dear Lord...

This all goes to show that I've long been stuck in some kind of mental wormhole that defies the standards of the space-time continuum. Or something like that.

We might call this wormhole conditioning. Which is both a psychological and physiological phenomenon. By habit this or that is done and by use the neurology adapts strengthening or weakening the relevant neural structures. I have problems with names.

Due to my childhood conditioning, I have hundreds of Pokemon names (and stats, bodyforms, etc.) memorized, but no where near the same aptitude with humans.

At least in my case it is a sad commentary about my unwillingness to let people get close.
