I really love Ziporyn translation but in this particular passage, I am not sure "Oblivion" is the best option for 忽. The couple shu 儵 and hu 忽 means an abrupt and sudden action, which is quite negative in the Zhuangzi whereas oblivion has generally positive values in the text
In that case, Mair's "Lickety" and "Split" for 儵 and 忽, respectively, would also fall short. I'm inclined to read Zhuangzi with a bit more playfulness, though, sprinkling a dash of light and humor into even the darker passages whose content is otherwise of negative connotation.
I'm not sure I see your issue with Mair here. "Lickety-split" can mean "as quickly as possible", and thus captures the sudden action aspect of 儵忽, as well as being appropriately playful. Indeed, it also nicely captures that the two names come together to form a unity.
No issue with Mair. Just noting Lickety-Split would also fall short if the translation had to convey only the dark side, re: "shu 儵 and hu 忽 means an abrupt and sudden action, which is quite negative in the Zhuangzi whereas oblivion has generally positive values in the text."
Essentially, shu 儵 and hu 忽 are *not necessarily* "quite negative." My point was the importance of preserving the mixed meaning, combining positive and negative connotations.
