Reflecting back to an intensive Mahāsī-style vipassanā retreat at Wat Chom Tong in Thailand, 2017, curious about their use of mettā. These instructions came on the final day:pic.twitter.com/2qj4K0aNhS
The final three days (of 23 total I was there) included the added component of mettā, which had not been introduced prior. The previous two days contained these instructions:pic.twitter.com/XGj5JiWqkJ
It started off mildly with short and simple sessions, but built to an intense finale, particularly during the final three "days of determination." There's a sleep-deprivation component (72 hours) that I still question, but the experience was nonetheless highly illuminating.
You must have had some serious momentum to get through that final three days.
I didn't know what I had gotten myself into with that stage, but the disentangling it entailed helped me get out of a massive snarl, loosening and untying the knots that had been binding me.
It was smoother than most transitions, for reasons unknown to me. Previously, I experienced more agitation or sense of being overwhelmed upon emerging from retreat. In this case, none. I had just come from a 28 day intensive at a monastery in S.Korea, so that may have helped.
I should also say that in some sense I never really transitioned "back," as the transition was more "forward." Within a month, I moved to a Chinese monastery where I lived for two years, so it wasn't quite like jumping back into the everyday mix of a bustling consumerist society.
